Constituted 3 March 1855 in the Regular Army as the 2d Cavalry
Organized 28 May 1855 at Louisville, Kentucky
Redesignated 3 August 1861 as the 5th Cavalry
Assigned to the 15th Cavalry Division December 1917 - May 1918
Assigned 18 December 1922 to the 1st Cavalry Division
Dismounted 28 February 1943 and reorganized 4 December 1943 partly under cavalry and partly under infantry tables of organization
Reorganized wholly as infantry 20 July 1945 but retained cavalry designations
Reorganized 25 March 1949 with troops redesignated companies
Reorganized 15 November 1957 as a parent regiment under the Combat Arms Regimental System
1st Battalion, 5th Cavalry Regiment
03 March 1855; Constituted in the Regular Army as the Company "A", 2nd Cavalry Regiment.
May - June 1855; Organized at Jefferson Barracks, Missouri.
03 August 1861; Redesignated as Company "A", 5th Cavalry.
1883; Cavalry Companies officially designated as Troops.
17 December 1917; Assigned to the 15th Cavalry Division.
11 May 1918; Relieved from the 15th Cavalry Division.
18 December 1922; Assigned to the 1st Cavalry Division.
28 February 1943; Dismounted.
04 December 1943; Reorganized partly under cavalry and partly under infantry tables of organization.
20 July 1945; Reorganized as infantry but retained cavalry designations.
25 March 1949; Redesignated as Company "A", 5th Cavalry.
15 October 1957; Reorganized and redesignated Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 1st Battle Group, 5th Cavalry and remained assigned to the 1st Cavalry Division (Organic elements concurrently constituted and activated in Korea).
01 September 1963; Reorganized and redesignated as 1st Battalion, 5th Cavalry.
01 July 1965; Transferred (less personnel and equipment) from Korea to Fort Benning, Georgia and reorganized.
